We are looking for an immediately available, temporary Head of Exhibitions for 5 months to work for a iconic gallery in central London.

You will be reporting in to the interim Director of Public Engagement, and be responsible for creating and managing the three exhibition programmes to achieve the Gallery's strategic goals. Delivering a dynamic, wide ranging and impactful offer for local, national and international audiences.

You will build and maintain excellent relationships at senior level to establish collaborative partnerships and develop new projects. You will also be responsible for the overall successful financial performance of the programme, including the generation of significant income.

Salary - £300 per day

Location - Central London

Working Days - 3 days a week

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the formal assessment and decision-making process for exhibitions, making recommendations on viability and potential of proposals, setting the Agenda for Exhibition Planning meetings and chairing these meetings
  • Make recommendations for structure and parameters of projects to ensure they meet the needs of the Gallery, its audiences, partners and external stakeholders
  • Work collaboratively with Directors and other Heads of Department to implement the programmes across the Gallery
  • Oversee the financial performance of the three exhibition programmes across the Gallery and NGG, including setting of budgets and targets with all relevant departments
  • Set exhibition business plans including significant profit targets
  • Maintain overview of entire programme finances across all departments including expenditure and income
  • Overall responsibility for the exhibitions department, comprising the on-site, national touring and international touring exhibitions teams.
  • Direct line management of the Head of National Touring Exhibitions and Senior International Touring Exhibitions Manager
  • Exhibitions for 2025-2026 programmed, with projects fully shaped and partners secured
  • National Touring programme: ensure Visits 2023 scoped and in train; maintain overview of current activity
  • International Touring programme: maintain overview of major international tour 2023 and ensure all key milestones and deliverables are being met
  • Working with the Head of Finance, establish the new Exhibitions Business Planning Group
  • Identify and monitor high level business and reputational risk associated with the programmes

Key Skills:

  • The ideal candidate MUST have previous exhibition experience at a gallery, museum or theatre
  • Extensive line management experience
  • Managed capital projects around £60-£90 million
